Demented World - by Thoraiya Dyer

When did we start living in a demented world? When did it become possible to advertise a product that "brings health and life to your hair" when, in fact, hair consists of dead skin cells and lifeless keratin? How can something that HAS no life be healthy or unhealthy? When did it become possible to advertise that Echinacea is good for colds and flu, when The New England Journal of Medicine (Vol 353: 341-348, July 2005) in an article by R.B. Turner et al, it was concluded that the happy little plant has absolutely no effect at all? I'm ready to begin my crusade. Welcome to Demented World

A Demented Year: 2008 in Review

December 31st 2008 08:32
As the New Year approaches, let us take time to rediscover (and guffaw incredulously at) what we’ve learned since I started posting on Demented World in April 2008.

We learned that we, as consumers, are complete suckers.

In complete disregard of scientific evidence, we buy cold and flu tablets that do absolutely nothing ( Really Long Link ), “Health” bars that are fattening ( Really Long Link ) and “Oxygenating crème” which neither energises cells, increases oxygen utilisation by cells, nor increases oxygen delivery to skin cells ( Really Long Link ).

We discovered that exercise is more helpful at warding off dementia than sudoku or Nintendo games ( Really Long Link ), and that keeping chickens in your backyard is not so much eco-friendly as an avian influenza outbreak risk ( Really Long Link ).

We were saddened by phoney doctors and engineers ( Really Long Link ), learned that men don’t need enlargements ( Really Long Link ), and that horoscopes can’t predict tennis results ( Really Long Link ).

We used the power of maths to dismiss the relevance of Savings Account Interest ( Really Long Link ), funeral insurance cover ( Really Long Link ), and winning the lottery ( Really Long Link ).

Not to mention our discovery that a million dollars in cash wouldn’t even fill a banana box, much less a semi-trailer.

We became disillusioned by beauty products containing fruit extracts ( Really Long Link ), snail slime ( Really Long Link ), and were disappointed by the hype of spa capsules ( Really Long Link ).

Concerned for our well being, we scrutinised the healing claims of crystal light bed therapy ( Really Long Link ), wild yams on our boobs ( Really Long Link ), hot rocks on our skin ( Really Long Link ), the great Colon Cure Scam ( Really Long Link ), and magnetic jewellery ( Really Long Link ).

We explored negative ion production ( Really Long Link ) and the mysterious “energies” and structure of quartz ( Really Long Link )

We also looked at Juice Plus supplements ( Really Long Link ), Krill oil (SWIM, little krill, SWIM!) ( Really Long Link ), Alpine Herbs ( Really Long Link ), eating liver and kidney, the garbage collectors of the body ( Really Long Link )and eating whey for getting ultra ripped ( Really Long Link ).

We now know whether aspartame give us alzheimer’s disease ( Really Long Link ).

We know whether we can get whooping cough from the whooping cough vaccine ( Really Long Link ).

In the arena of weight loss, we investigated the lemon detox diet ( Really Long Link ), weight watchers meals ( Really Long Link ), the need for exercise equipment ( Really Long Link ), the effectiveness of hoodia, fucoslim and acai (ha ha ha) ( Really Long Link ), and the KFC snack box, which actually contains half your daily fat allowance ( Really Long Link ).

As far as baby health and development, we examined cot death ( Really Long Link ), prenatal education ( Really Long Link ) and BabyPlus ( Really Long Link ), feeding vegetables to kiddies ( Really Long Link ) and keeping them far, far away from television ( Really Long Link ).

And when it came to animals, we looked at pet food ( Really Long Link ), where the most beautiful is not the best, investigated ultrasonic rodent repellent ( Really Long Link ) and discovered that sometimes, kangaroo culls are kindness ( Really Long Link ).

We delved into Eating like a Horse and Sweating like a Pig ( Really Long Link ).

We learned you can buy bacteria-laden foods ( Really Long Link ), or waste lots of time and effort trying to eliminate bacteria from your life ( Really Long Link ).

It’s all in the advertising.

Which is so full of lies, you barely notice them any more ( Really Long Link ).

But without advertising, how could we choose our coffee ( Really Long Link ), our tea ( Really Long Link ), our foods with “real” ingredients ( Really Long Link ) or our McEurope Burgers ( Really Long Link ) ??

And it’s not just advertising on television. Spam tells us lies as well, such as the Dust-Off hoax ( Really Long Link ), and junk snail mail would have us believe that unqualified quacks can interpret blood smears with the same accuracy as a real pathology lab ( Really Long Link ).

We now know that genetically modified (GM) canola is not Godzilla ( Really Long Link ), that genetic testing can be a waste of money ( Really Long Link ), and that leadership traits are not genetic ( Really Long Link ).

Then, we had commentaries on housing for the desperate ( Really Long Link ), housing for the old and frightened ( Really Long Link ), and radiation-shields for the paranoid ( Really Long Link ) – too bad they don’t work.

We endeavoured to answer such questions as Woolworths: Goodies or Baddies? ( Really Long Link ) (with a later update here ( Really Long Link )), What Tattoos and Leg Waxing Have in Common ( Really Long Link ) and Can Stainless Steel neutralise toilet odours? ( Really Long Link )

Finally, we learned that Jesus is OUT, love calculators are IN ( Really Long Link ), and that you CAN’T expect to make a few modifications to your car and then fill it up with water instead of petrol ( Really Long Link ).

Happy New Year!

May there be many more demented ones to come.
