Demented World - by Thoraiya Dyer

When did we start living in a demented world? When did it become possible to advertise a product that "brings health and life to your hair" when, in fact, hair consists of dead skin cells and lifeless keratin? How can something that HAS no life be healthy or unhealthy? When did it become possible to advertise that Echinacea is good for colds and flu, when The New England Journal of Medicine (Vol 353: 341-348, July 2005) in an article by R.B. Turner et al, it was concluded that the happy little plant has absolutely no effect at all? I'm ready to begin my crusade. Welcome to Demented World

Are you the creative type?

Stripped of fashion, habit, and pretensions of language, a truly creative person is difficult to recognize from the crowd. Even reality show has made us believe the Survivors were doing without the help of TV producers in the jungles of South America or Australia. The truly creative find it difficult to fit in, but easy to stand out. In the lab, psychologists give us a clear view of what differentiates creative people from the rest of the population.

APPRECIATION OF COMPLEXITY. If creative peple are presented with line drawings, they much prefer the complex, irregular, almost chaotic drawings; non-creatives definitely prefer the simple, orderly, neat figures.

OPENNESS TO EXPERIENCE. Is it harder for you to adapt to routine or constant change?

INTUITIVENESS. A greater inclination to rely on and trust their intuition and non-rational mental processes.

INDEPENDENCE. Autonomy, non-conformity.

"Creativity is a gift from the gods," says Kurt Vonnegut. But I say it can be troublesome, too.

I'd like to think I'm creative but I'm not too sure. I'm definitely non-rational, though that could be just a lack of general logic. I like creating routines in my life, but I never stick to them, so is that a sign?

Hi Jimbo,

Not wanting to stick to a routine is a sign of creativity, but it can also be a lack of self discipline. That's what makes creativity so deceptive. Lots of people think just because they're unpredictable they're also creative. It would be safe to say that if you were too creative, you'd be looked at as a loon, but if you were too uncreative, you'd be rigid as wood. Let's hope we're just in between.
