Scientists predict future, but Nature takes over

On a tombstone, an epithet of a scientist may look like this:
Whether people stand on picket lines and rant with placards of protest, saying things like "STOP ILLEGAL GENETIC MANIPULATION" or "NO TO NANO-POLLUTANTS", it won't matter. Scientists are always doing their best to help mankind. Can we help it if they're so nice to us ordinary people?
So I'm putting my faith on the epithet because there will always be an unexpected gamma ray burst, a rogue blackhole, a giant solar flare, or a sympathetic asteroid to keep the scientists from donning their gloves and handling uber-advanced technology to shape (distort?) mankind's future.
