Substance P: Breakthrough in Diabetes Treatment?

As we know our bodies produce so many neuropeptides that are still not fully discovered by medical science. One of them includes "Substance P", which is a neuropeptide present in the sensory nerve of the pancreas. This neuropeptide lets the pancreas produce the right amount of insulin.
Destroy the faulty nerves in the pancreas of mice that are likely to have diabetes, and the diabetes would disappear. Scientists also experimented with pumping up on Substance P for mice that are already diseased, and the diabetic symptoms disappeared overnight, for weeks, and for months even.
The same principle may one day apply to humans, something diabetics all over the world are hoping for. The discovery may open new doors for more effective therapies -- thanks to Michael Dosch and his colleagues at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada.
