What inspires you to write?

"Writing? Writing's easy. All you have to do is put down whatever occurs to you. But the 'occurring', now that's the hard part." - Stephen Leacock
Inspiration is tricky. You don't have to wait for the Muse to come each time you are compelled to write. Often, the problem is not really how to generate ideas, but how to generate original ideas. You do this by learning how to exploit the creative process.
I exploit the creative process just like a mouse set to find its way inside an uber-intricate maze. The mouse practically bumps into everything until it hits the cheese block or the exit. Basically, I brainstorm and "disassociate".
How do you work? Someone asked Einstein once. "I grope." That's kind of messy, if you think about it, but that's how you come up with ideas.
"Once you find that idea or thread, all the other anecdotes, illustrations, and quotes are pearls that you hang on this thread. The thread may seem very humble, the pearls may seem very flashy, but it's still the thread that makes the necklace." Take that from Thomas Boswell.
So what inspires you to write?
